  1. Tidal volumes of 240 cc were chosen based on ARDSnet protocol; the standard 6 cc/kg was used in a calculation for a standard 40 kg pig. PEEP of 0, 10, and 20 cmH2O were chosen to reflect a progressive PEEP scale advocated by the ARDSnet protocol [11]. A maximum PEEP of 20cmH2O was chosen because this value generated a plateau pressure of ~ 25 cmH2O, most similar to the plateau pressure seen in the TCAV groups
