Bronchoalveolar lavage analysis at the end of the experiment demonstrated an inflammatory acute lung injury with the two-hit model for both saline-treated and DDFPe-treated mice (n = 12) compared to spontaneously breathing mice that were not exposed to LPS injection or mechanical ventilation (n = 2). There was a statistically significant decrease in cell count (p = 0.01) with DDFPe-treated mice compared to saline-treated mice (dashed line, left panel), but no difference in protein concentration (p = 0.33) (right panel).
